Sometimes, especially a year into a pandemic, you just want to watch a nice film about people trying hard, and the French seem to make more of these than anyone. Grégory Magne’s Perfumes is just that sort of film: by no means a necessary watch, but one you’ll be glad to have spent the time on. The film stars Emmanuelle Devos as Anne, a socially awkward former perfumer who now earns her living by helping companies who need to fix a scent problem, whether of a leather handbag or a cave. Guillaume (Grégory Montel) enters her life as her chauffeur, taking her from job to job, and the two slowly form a friendship. Soon, she’s hiring him to help her on her jobs as a sort of personal assistant in a chauffeur uniform.
Guillaume is a recently divorced father struggling to make enough money to live somewhere where he can house his daughter, which means he’s keen to keep his job, even if it means tending to Anne’s eccentric needs. He admires what she does, and she teaches him about the trade. The film is a sort of odd couple sometimes road movie where both characters form a professional bond which improves their personal lives. And there are some delightful details about how perfumes are made, how different chemicals combine to form scents, and how scents can be manipulated. Perfumes is a lovely little feel-good film.
