Description
The 2021 Creative Nonfiction Workshop is a two month celebration of boundary-pushing documentary filmmaking. Creative nonfiction films are more than mere information dumps; instead, these films are as much about how they’re about their subject as what they’re about, exploring the meaning of terms like ‘truth’ and ‘reality’.
The workshop includes a series of virtual screenings and four in-depth masterclasses with nonfiction filmmakers, in which ticket holders will be able to ask questions. If you can’t make the time of the masterclass, don’t worry! You’ll get access to a recording of it after the fact.
Each session will focus on a particular topic and feature a pair of filmmakers discussing their work with each other. The four sessions are:
- Reclaiming history: Cheryl Foggo (John Ware Reclaimed) with Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man)
- Personal cinema: Kirsten Johnson (Dick Johnson is Dead, Cameraperson) with Sophy Romvari (Still Processing)
- Nonfiction character studies: Jonas Poher Rasmussen (Sundance World Documentary winner Flee) with Eliane Raheb (Berlinale Teddy Award winner Miguel’s War)
- Directing and editing nonfiction: Robert Greene (editor-director, Bisbee ‘17, Kate Plays Christine) with Joe Bini (editor-director, long-time collaborator with Werner Herzog)
As well as entry to each masterclass, each ticket holder will get:
- An early-release copy of Seventh Row’s upcoming ebook, Subjective realities: The art of creative nonfiction film, on July 30th
- Virtual screening access to several films by the guest filmmakers, some of which are otherwise hard or impossible to access
- An opportunity to build community, as ticket holders will be invited to a shared online forum and several informal Zoom discussion groups, where they can meet like-minded people and engage in discussion about nonfiction filmmaking
