The Seventh Row Podcast is by and large a contemporary film podcast that focuses on Canadian, British, Indigenous, and International Cinema. We especially focus on films by and about women, young people, LGBTQ+ people, Indigenous people, and other marginalized groups. As such, our podcasts often explore rape culture, existential crises, portraits of female artists, motherhood and reproductive rights, and masculinity.
Recognizing that filmmakers and actors regularly move between film, TV, and theatre, we also cover some TV shows, recorded theatre, and theatre adaptations. The Seventh Row podcast discusses the relationship between these three media. The podcast also regularly engages with the relationship between fiction and nonfiction filmmaking, especially in our episodes on creative nonfiction films.
The Seventh Row Podcast features multiple episodes on film by filmmakers we love (e.g., Andrew Haigh, Sarah Polley, Kelly Reichardt, Céline Sciamma, Joachim Trier) and the filmographies of emerging directors (e.g., Desirée Akhavan, Anne Émond, Francis Lee, Pascal Plante, Magnus von Horn, Justine Triet, Kris Rey). We often cover film festivals and zeitgeist-y Oscar Hopefuls (even when we hate them).
Some of our most popular episodes are deep dives on films including, Promising Young Woman, Women Talking, The Worst Person in the World, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Petite Maman, Oslo, August 31st, Ammonite. We also sometimes record cheeky episodes like Who is the Poshest Actor in Britain?,
Below are some of our most common topics explored on the Seventh Row Podcast, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Take a look through our episode archive for more information.
